KWD Industrial Couplings
Gear Coupling Cardan Shafts
The gear coupling cardan shaft manufactured in Dresden with fatigue-proof gearing can advantageously replace the conventional cardan shaft in both standard and special applications. The innovative toothing design allows high torques to be transmitted even at high angular displacements and speeds; it is very durable with virtually no wear and lower maintenance costs.

Operating principle
The coupling system operates homokinetically and does not generate inhomogeneities in torque and angular velocity; it is therefore no longer necessary to operate in the W or Z configuration. The disadvantages of the conventional cardan shaft due to its design are eliminated or greatly reduced. Homogeneous power transmission and minimal restoring forces on the connection geometry reduce vibration excitation in the drivetrain, resulting in longer component service life and a higher level of drive comfort throughout the entire drivetrain.

Technical features
• Per joint plane up to ±14° at rated torque and speed — enormous power density with high angular displacement
• Toothing with high transmittable torque and simultaneously higher permissible speeds; lower drive-train masses
• Bellows seal prevents ingress of contaminants and leakage of lubricant
• Lubricant change intervals > 5 years possible with oil lubrication; quick and easy lubricant change
• No life-limiting machine elements (e.g. rolling bearings); minimal maintenance costs
• Axial length compensation integrated into the hermetically sealed gear-coupling joint, without additional plug-in toothing
• Weight-optimised intermediate shafts made of composite material possible; electrical insulation available
Typical applications
Railway traction (multiple units, high-speed trains), construction machinery, drilling and special-purpose vehicles — drivetrains with high speeds and large angular displacements.
