1. Product Overview (Original Page 1)

The EFR4002IP Energy Flow Relay monitors the direction of current (power) flow between the public grid and a generating plant or consumer loads. The device can be conveniently operated remotely via its integrated web server or directly on the device itself. Measurement values are clearly organized and displayed on the device's display.

When the power generated by an on-site generating plant exceeds actual on-site consumption, self-consumption of the surplus energy is often more economical. This is particularly advantageous when there is a significant difference between the electricity purchase price charged by the grid operator and the feed-in tariff paid for electricity exported to the grid.

Many sites that would otherwise be suitable for photovoltaic installations have previously been unusable because the grid connection point permits only limited power export.

In Germany, the new standard VDE-AR-N 4105:2018-11 allows the installed generation capacity to exceed this limit by up to 66.6% or even more, provided that the additional generated electricity is consumed on-site rather than fed into the grid. The EFR4002IP can monitor the system to help ensure that this requirement is met while maintaining grid stability.

The same principle applies to zero-export applications, in which no electrical energy may be exported to the grid. In such applications, the device can serve as an Energy Flow Sensor (EnFluRi). The EFR4002IP is optimized for these functions and can exchange data with a PPS (Power Plant Controller).

1.1 Key Product Features

  • Zero-export device model: EFR4002IP

  • Compliance-related monitoring: Monitoring of Pav,e in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4105:2018-11.

  • Application objective: Optimize the self-consumption of self-generated electricity and increase the self-consumption ratio.

  • Energy Flow Sensor (EnFluRi) and feed-in limitation: Response time < 0.1 s.

  • Two operating modes: Zero-export device or limiter.

    • If the permitted feed-in power limit is exceeded, relay K3 disconnects the generating system or part of it.

    • Before disconnection becomes necessary, regulation can be performed via the analog output, or loads can be switched on via relays K1 and K2 to absorb surplus energy or reduce generator output.

Figure 1. Original page 1: Product overview, functions, features and ordering information.

2. Functions

  • Switching up to three loads: The operating mode can be configured for maximum-load priority, priority-based sequencing (1–2–3), or combinations of the three loads, providing a total of seven stages.

  • Switch-on and switch-off thresholds: Set the energy-flow levels at which loads are switched on and subsequently switched off.

  • Switch-on/switch-off delays and minimum on-time: These functions can also be used to control heat pumps (SG Ready), battery chargers and inverters.

3. Features

  • Suitable for medium-voltage applications.

  • Compatible with grounded medium-voltage current transformers and measuring devices connected in series.

  • Active power measurement: single-phase or three-phase, range ±99.99 MW.

  • Pav,e monitoring with predefined settings or freely configurable values.

  • Pav,e monitoring compliant with the entire limit curve.

  • Three current inputs for conventional current transformers with 1 A or 5 A secondary current.

  • Compatible with current transformers with adjustable transformation ratios.

  • Energy counters for separately recording exported and consumed energy.

  • Three relay outputs.

  • Four digital inputs, Y1–Y4, for control signals, such as forcing relays to switch on or off.

  • IP network connectivity with an integrated web server.

  • Measurement values can be read via Modbus TCP and SunSpec (Energy Meter model).

  • Analog output that can be used as a measuring transducer or for stepless control of a load.

5.3 Example 2: Low-Voltage Grid with a Measuring Device Connected in Series (Original Page 3)

This configuration is intended for low-voltage grids where an existing energy meter or other measuring device is connected in series. The EFR4002IP obtains measurement signals through current transformers connected to the measuring circuit.

Figure 3. Original page 3: Wiring example for a low-voltage grid with a measuring device connected in series.

5.4 Example 3: Grounded Current Transformer (Medium-Voltage Application, Original Page 4)

This configuration is intended for medium-voltage applications using grounded medium-voltage current transformers. The adjustable current transformer ratio (1:1 to 1:250), together with a suitable current transformer, enables energy-flow monitoring on the medium-voltage side. The measurable current range can be extended to 2,400 A.
